CPA Statement – Cancellation of the 61st Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference 2015 in Islamabad, Pakistan, October 2015

21 August 2015
12:00 (UK Time/GMT+1)

Established in 1911, the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) exists to promote the advancement of parliamentary democracy by enhancing knowledge and understanding of democratic governance. As a membership and non-political association, we connect, develop, promote and support Parliamentarians and their staff to identify benchmarks of good governance, and implement the enduring values of the Commonwealth.

The 61st Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (61st CPC) and associated conferences, workshops, Executive and Subcommittee meetings that were scheduled to take place in Islamabad, Pakistan, from 30 September to 8 October 2015 have been cancelled by the CPA International Executive Committee.

The decision was taken by the CPA International Executive Committee, during an emergency meeting held on 19 August 2015, because of the Host Branch’s (Pakistan’s) inability to invite one of the CPA’s eligible Branch Members (Jammu and Kashmir Branch) to the Conference, and the need to uphold the CPA Constitution.

As a consequence, the CPA International Executive Committee will meet in London, UK, from 30 September to 6 October 2015 (inclusive of arrival and departure dates).

All governance-related meetings that would have been held during the Plenary Conference will not be affected by the cancellation of the Conference, as these will now be held in London.

CPA Members should contact their Regional Representatives or the CPA Secretariat for further information.
