CPA Statement on the Maldives decision to leave The Commonwealth

Following the reports that the Republic of Maldives has announced its decision to leave The Commonwealth, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Mr Akbar Khan has said:

“We have received the news that the Republic of Maldives has decided to leave the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association is deeply saddened by this decision. The CPA exists to develop and support Parliamentarians and their staff to identify benchmarks of good governance, promote parliamentary democracy and to implement the enduring values of the Commonwealth as recognised in the Commonwealth Charter. This reflects the commitment of all our Members to democracy and human rights, development and growth, and diversity.

As a result of this development and according to the Constitution of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association which states that CPA Branches must be recognised as members of the Commonwealth, the CPA Maldives Branch is now placed in abeyance until further notice.

The CPA hopes that in the future the Maldives may feel able to return to the Commonwealth family and all that it represents and we look forward to this.”

Established in 1911, the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) exists to promote the advancement of parliamentary democracy by enhancing knowledge and understanding of democratic governance. As a membership and non-political association, the CPA connects, develops, promotes and supports Parliamentarians and their staff to identify benchmarks of good governance, parliamentary democracy and implement the enduring values of the Commonwealth.
