13th Canadian Parliamentary Seminar held in Ottawa, Canada

The CPA Canada Branch has co-hosted the Canadian Parliamentary Seminar with the CPA Secretariat from 29 May to 4 June. The theme of the Seminar was Strengthening Democracy and the Role of Parliamentarians: Challenges and Solutions.

Participating Branches were Mauritius, Namibia, Zanzibar, Singapore, Tasmania, Queensland, Jersey, Northern Ireland, Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, India Union, Mizoram, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos and New Zealand. 

Topics discussed were the Commonwealth and the Role of the CPA; the Canadian Political Scene; the Role and Operation of the Canadian Parliament; Parliamentary Committees; Financing Elections; the Parliamentary Presence of Political Parties: the Role of Party Caucuses; How an MP's Office Works; Tools and Resources to Engage Citizens; and Twinning Initiatives and Influencing Governments and Regulating Influence: Parliament and Lobbyists. A Farewell Dinner was hosted by Ms Yasmin Ratansi, MP and Chair of the Canadian Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

Participants were furthermore given the opportunity to observe Senator's Statements and Official Recognition and the House of Commons Question Period.

The Seminar is designed to meet the needs of newly elected members and/or backbench parliamentarians. It is aimed at complementing to existing professional development programmes for Parliamentarians and as a tool for sharing best practices throughout the Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association connects, develops, promotes and supports Parliamentarians and their staff to identify benchmarks of good governance and the implementation of the enduring values of the Commonwealth.
