Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Secretary-General attends 46th British Islands and Mediterranean Region Annual Conference in Jersey 

The 46th British Islands and Mediterranean Regional Annual Conference has been hosted by the States of Jersey and the CPA Jersey Branch from 15 to 18 May 2016. The Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Mr Akbar Khan attended the conference, his first in his role as Secretary-General.

The CPA BIM Region conference was officially opened with a welcoming address by the Bailiff of Jersey, Mr. William Bailhache, Presiding Officer of the States Assembly. The overall theme of the conference is ‘Parliaments and public engagement’ and participants heard from a wide range of speakers. CPA Branches represented at the conference included: Alderney, Cyprus, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey, Malta, Scotland, St Helena, UK, Northern Ireland and Wales.

During his visit to Jersey, the CPA Secretary-General, Mr Akbar Khan also visited Jersey College for Girls to deliver a CPA Roadshow on Parliament and the Commonwealth. The Secretary-General was accompanied on the CPA Roadshow by Jersey Education Minister Deputy Rod Bryans and his visit to the school was designed to help to increase young people’s awareness of parliament and democracy.
