Commonwealth packs and CPA Roadshows teachers’ materials complete long journey to reach local schools in Tonga

Local schools in Tonga have received materials from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Headquarters Secretariat about the Commonwealth, parliament and the 2017 Commonwealth Day theme of ‘A Peace-building Commonwealth’. Mr Manase Foukimoana, Education Officer at the Parliament of Tonga presented the CPA information to the schools who participated in the CPA Roadshows in Tonga including: Principal of the Catholic School Apifo’ou College, Fr. Aisake Vaisima; Principal of the Latter Day Saints School Liahona High School, Mrs Fehi; Principal of the Ocean of Light College, Mrs Nadia Fifita; and the Secretary of the Anglican St Andrew’s High School receiving the CPA folder on behalf of the Principal.

Many of the schools and colleges in Tonga benefited from the CPA Roadshows for Schools that took place in July 2016 when the CPA Secretary-General, Mr Akbar Khan delivered CPA Roadshows to thousands of young people in Tonga while attending the 47th Presiding Officers and Clerks Conference for the Pacific Region - click here. The Secretary-General visited St Andrew’s High School, Tonga High School, ‘Apifo’ou College, Liahona High School, Tonga College ‘Atele, Ocean of Light International School and Tupou College. The CPA Secretary-General was accompanied by Hon. Penisimani Fifita, Chairman of the Whole House Committee and Chairman of the Standing Committee for Social Services.

With the Commonwealth’s 52 member countries having a combined population of more than 2.4 billion, of which more than 60% are under 30 years of age, the CPA Roadshows aim to engage with young people and education establishments to promote democracy. The CPA Roadshows provide an opportunity for young people to discuss the issues of concern about their society and democracy, to meet local Members of Parliament and Parliamentary staff and to find out about the work of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and the wider Commonwealth.
