Commonwealth CPA Roadshows tour comes to Twickenham Prep School in South West London with local MP

The Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Mr Akbar Khan and local UK Member of Parliament, Dr Tania Mathias MP visited Twickenham Prep School in South West London as part of the CPA Roadshows tour of schools and universities across the Commonwealth.

The CPA Roadshows provide an opportunity for young people to learn about the political values of the Commonwealth such as diversity, development and parliamentary democracy; to discuss issues of concern about the society in which they live; and to meet local Members of Parliament and Parliamentary staff and to find out about the work of the CPA.

The CPA Secretary-General Mr Akbar Khan and Twickenham MP, Dr Tania Mathias MP attended Headmaster David Malam’s Friday Awards Assembly before the students heard about the Commonwealth and the role of the CPA in promoting diversity, development and democracy from the CPA Secretary-General and the role of a Member of Parliament from Dr Tania Mathias.

With the Commonwealth’s 53 member countries having a combined population of more than 2 billion, of which more than 60% are under 30 years of age, the CPA Roadshows aim to engage with young people and education establishments to promote parliamentary democracy and participation in political life.

The Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Mr Akbar Khan said: “As the CPA approaches its 105th year, we are very excited about bringing the CPA Roadshow to Twickenham Prep School with my local Member of Parliament, Dr Tania Mathias MP and to engage with local students on the values that unite the Commonwealth.”

CPA Roadshows provide an opportunity for young people to discuss issues of concern about their society and democracy, to meet local Members of Parliament and Parliamentary staff and to find out about the work of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and the wider Commonwealth. CPA Branches are being encouraged to host a CPA Roadshow in their own jurisdiction with Members of Parliament meeting young people.
