Innovative CPA-sponsored video project engages young people in Victoria, Australia with 2017 Peace-building Commonwealth theme

The Victoria Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) at the Parliament of Victoria, Australia have launched the next stage of their 2017 Commonwealth Day project ‘Peace by Piece. The project was developed as an innovative way to engage the youth of Australia with the 2017 Commonwealth Day theme of ‘A Peace-building Commonwealth’. This project is part of a bigger vision of the Victorian Parliament to actively involve youth through a series of workshops that encourage young people to identify new ways in which they would like the Parliament to engage with them.

For stage one of the project, young Victorian filmmaker Marta Malchevski was asked to capture through film the perspective of youth on what can be done to create a more harmonious society. She asked some of her young friends this important question and the result is a vibrant short film with their responses. Click here or see below to view the short film ‘Peace by Piece’

The young people’s answers were both inspiring and insightful and the filmmaker used an engaging interview technique to enhance the visual appeal of the video and connect it to the environment in which people live. The final short video encapsulates the perspectives of youth on the world they currently live in and the future that they envisage and it reflects an engagement of youth with the values they see as being important to ensuring a peaceful and harmonious future.

The next stage of this project has been recently launched via the Parliament of Victoria and it invites all young Australians between the ages of 16 and 30 to share their ideas by way of video submissions on the question ‘What can we all do to create a more harmonious society?’. All submissions are welcomed before 11 August 2017 and a Panel Selection Award and People’s Choice Award will be awarded. To submit a video entry please visit the Parliament of Victoria’s Facebook page.

This project is an exciting initiative that encourages youth to be empowered and engaged in their society. The CPA Victoria Branch were able to access Commonwealth Day bursary funding for this project from the CPA Headquarters Secretariat.
