Acting Secretary General visits the Parliament of Fiji

 

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Acting Secretary General and Director of Finance & Administration, Mr Joe Omorodion has visited the Parliament of the Republic of Fiji during a goodwill tour of the Pacific Region. The Parliament of Fiji will be reinstated as a member of the CPA from 1 January 2016.

During the visit, the Acting Secretary General met a number of dignitaries including Hon. Dr Jiko F Luveni, Speaker of Parliament of Fiji; Mrs. Viniana Namosimalua, Secretary-General to Parliament and Mrs. Jeanette Emberson, Deputy Secretary-General to Parliament; and a meeting with Women Parliamentarians, Hon. Jilila Kumar, Hon. Salote Radrodro and Hon. Tupou Draunidalo.

In the meetings at the Parliament of Fiji, the Acting Secretary General gave a briefing on the work of the CPA, particularly governance arrangements at the CPA, the programmes and services available to the Fiji Branch Parliamentarians and Staff, as well as the Pacific Region in general. Madam Speaker thanked the Acting Secretary General for the visit.

The Acting Secretary General, Mr Joe Omorodion, accompanied by Mrs Musonda Sandy from the CPA Secretariat, afterwards visited the official residence of Mr. Roderick Drummond, British High Commissioner to Fiji where they also met the High Commissioners from Australia, New Zealand and Kiribati. The High Commissioners expressed a keen interest in working with the CPA and other agencies on the ground to support in the building of the capacity of the Fiji Parliamentarians and Parliamentary Staff.

The Acting Secretary General and Director of Finance & Administration, Mr Joe Omorodion joined Madam Speaker and Parliamentary Officials at the swearing-in ceremony of the new President of the Republic of Fiji, Major General (ret'd) Jioji Konousi Konrote.

During the visit to Fiji, the Acting Secretary General and Director of Finance & Administration, Mr Joe Omorodion, accompanied by Mrs Musonda Sandy from the CPA Secretariat, met with the UNDP Pacific Deputy Resident Representative, Akiko Fujii and Dyfan Jones, Parliamentary Development Specialist. In the meeting with the UNDP, the CPA shared respective areas of current and future work to look at opportunities for collaboration.
