Secretary-General visits the CPA Montserrat Branch and delivers a CPA Roadshow



The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Secretary-General, Mr Akbar Khan, visited the CPA Montserrat Branch from 27-29 March 2016. During the visit, the Secretary-General met a number of dignitaries including the Premier Donaldson Romeo; the Hon. Speaker of the Montserrat Legislative Assembly and Vice-Chairperson of the CPA International Executive Committee, Hon. Shirley Osborne; the Governor of Montserrat, H.E. Elizabeth Carriere, OBE; and the Opposition Leader, Hon Reuben T. Meade. Mr Khan also met with parliamentary staff and members of the public.
 
The Secretary-General's visit included a CPA Roadshow held in Montserrat to help to increase young people’s awareness of parliament and democracy. Attended by local dignitaries and students from Montserrat and Antigua, Speaker Osborne commented that she was happy and encouraged that the CPA had chosen to come to Montserrat for its second CPA Roadshow and she encouraged all young people to be vocal and to seize the opportunity to find their voice and contribute to civic society.

Premier Donaldson Romeo (pictured with the Secretary-General), speaking at the CPA Roadshow, said:"It is my hope that young people will connect with Parliamentarians and democracy. This will act as a catalyst to enhance youth participation in politics in Montserrat and Antigua. Seize the opportunity to empower yourself. The you is the future - you are the ones that need to claim that rightful place in decision making. Today you are young citizens but tomorrow you are decision makers." 

CPA Roadshows provide an opportunity for young people to discuss issues of concern about their society and democracy, to meet local Members of Parliament and Parliamentary staff and to find out about the work of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and the wider Commonwealth.
