Secretary-General attends World Bank and IMF Global Parliamentary Conference in Washington DC 



The Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Mr Akbar Khan has attended the 2016 Global Parliamentary Conference, organised by the World Bank Group (WBG), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and IMF in Washington DC, USA. The Global Conference is the Parliamentary Network’s flagship event, bringing together some 200 Parliamentarians from over 100 countries, leaders from civil society and partner organizations, and top officials from a number of International Financial Institutions including the World Bank, IMF and regional development banks.

The Secretary-General of the CPA attended a special session on the Leadership of the World Bank Group and IMF with Mme. Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the IMF; Dr. Jim Yong Kim, President of the World Bank Group and Mr Jeffrey Lefroy MP, Chair.

While at the 2016 Global Parliamentary Conference at the World Bank Group Headquarters, the Secretary-General also held a number of bilateral meetings. The Secretary-General of the CPA met with Mr Bachir Dieye of the Assemblé Parlementaire de la Francophonie to discuss cooperation between the two organisations especially as several countries such as Cameroon, Rwanda and Canada are members of both organisations.

The Secretary-General met with Lord Tu’ivakano, Hon. Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga about the CPA’s future activities and the work of Tonga in the Pacific Region.

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association connects, develops, promotes and supports Parliamentarians and their staff to identify benchmarks of good governance and the implementation of the enduring values of the Commonwealth.
