42nd Regional Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Caribbean, Americas and Atlantic Region takes place in St Kitts 


The St Kitts and Nevis Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) has hosted the 42nd Regional Conference of the Caribbean, Americas and Atlantic (CAA) Region. Hundreds of Commonwealth Parliamentarians and observers from around the region gathered in St. Kitts and Nevis for the week-long conference hosted in St. Kitts and Nevis for the second time in its history on the theme of ‘Enhancing Democracy through the use of the Parliamentary System and the Media’.

The conference also held the 10th Regional Conference of Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) and the Caribbean Regional Youth Parliament, hosted by the St Kitts National Youth Parliament Association (SKNYPA). During the conference, the CPA Caribbean, Americas and Atlantic Regional ‘Hot Topic’ Forum Part Two took place which heard from a number of speakers on the need for increased women’s political participation for the benefit of wider society as they discussed the ‘hot topic’ of the region - ‘Seeking to Increase Women’s Political Participation’.

Local schools in Tonga have received materials from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Headquarters Secretariat about the Commonwealth, parliament and the 2017 Commonwealth Day theme of ‘A Peace-building Commonwealth

Innovative CPA-sponsored video project engages young people in Victoria, Australia with 2017 Peace-building Commonwealth theme  

The Victoria Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) at the Parliament of Victoria, Australia have launched the next stage of their 2017 Commonwealth Day project ‘Peace by Piece’. The project was developed as an innovative way to engage the youth of Australia with the 2017 Commonwealth Day theme of ‘A Peace-building Commonwealth’

CPA Chairperson highlights the role of the Opposition as important for strengthening parliamentary democracy at CPA Roadshow for young people in Bangladesh 

The CPA President and Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Executive Committee, Hon. Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, MP, Speaker of the Parliament of Bangladesh has highlighted the role of the Opposition and the Treasury bench as important for strengthening parliamentary democracy at CPA Roadshow for young people in Bangladesh. The CPA Chairperson emphasised that if the Opposition plays a constructive and responsible role in the democratic process then the accountability of the government can be ensured.

Former Commonwealth Secretary-General warns of pressures on global democracy at first Pacific Region Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Lecture

Former Commonwealth Secretary-General and New Zealand Parliamentarian, Sir Don McKinnon ONZ GCVO has delivered the first Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Lecture in the CPA Pacific Region speaking about the challenges democracies face globally and how to overcome them on 2 May, 2017 at the Houses of Parliament in Wellington, New Zealand. 
Sir Don McKinnon spoke on the subject of ‘Dark clouds over democracy’ and said that democracy was facing big challenges across the Pacific Region as well as across the Commonwealth but that it still offered a system everyone could participate in.

Progress in promoting democracy between Parliament, Parliamentarians and citizens recognised during Commonwealth Parliamentary Association visit to Fiji

Youth engagement in Australia as Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Roadshow visits college students in Darwin  

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) has brought its youth engagement programme to Australia with a CPA Roadshow visit to Taminmin College, a school in Darwin, Northern Territory. The CPA Roadshows highlight the importance of encouraging youth engagement in the political process and the sharing of Commonwealth political values, especially with the 60% of the 2.4 billion population of the Commonwealth who are aged under 30.
