CPA Secretary-General attends Commonwealth service at Chelmsford Cathedral           
The Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Mr Akbar Khan attended a special multi-faith and multi-cultural service at Chelmsford Cathedral in Essex, England to mark the founding of the Commonwealth and its past, present and future.

Queen Elizabeth II, Head of the Commonwealth and Patron of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association opens CHOGM 2018            
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II opened the 2018 Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) at Buckingham Palace to mark the start of two days of meetings with 53 Commonwealth leaders, both in London and at Windsor Castle. The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) was represented at the opening ceremony of the CHOGM 2018 at Buckingham Palace by the Secretary-General, Mr Akbar Khan, who also attended many meetings and events during the week. At the 2018 CHOGM, the CPA Secretary-General presented to the Commonwealth Foreign Ministers meetings on behalf of the Commonwealth Associated Organisations (AOs). Heads of all 53 Commonwealth nations met under the theme of ‘Towards a Common Future’ and discussed how member states will work even closer together on sustainability, fairness, security and prosperity. Member states also discussed ways of collaborating to tackle the threat of climate change.

Commonwealth Parliamentarians contribute to CHOGM 2018 and associated Commonwealth Forums in London, UK            
Commonwealth Parliamentarians including the CPA Chairperson, CPA Vice-President, CPA Treasurer, CPA Small Branches Chairperson and CPA Secretary-General participated in four associated Commonwealth Forums which took place ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings (CHOGM) in the United Kingdom from 16 to 20 April 2018. Gender equality and overcoming barriers to political participation emphasised at 2018 Commonwealth Women's Forum           
The 2018 Commonwealth Women's Forum has emphasised women's positive political, economic and societal contributions ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings (CHOGM) in the United Kingdom. The three-day Commonwealth Women’s Forum (CWF) saw many Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) speaking at the forum on a wide range of issues.

Importance of separation of powers to ensure effective governance highlighted at 2018 Commonwealth People’s Forum           
The Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Small Branches, Hon. Angelo Farrugia, Speaker of the Parliament of Malta spoke about the importance of the separation of powers between the legislature, the executive and the judiciary to ensure effective governance and democracy at a workshop session at 2018 Commonwealth People’s Forum. The CPA Small Branches Chairperson also highlighted the CPA’s role in the establishment of the Commonwealth Latimer House Principles on the separation of powers and the CPA’s Recommended Benchmarks for Democratic Legislatures.

Youth delegates highlight the importance of their contribution for the future of the Commonwealth at the 2018 Commonwealth Youth Forum           
The Commonwealth Youth Forum brought together over 500 youth delegates including CPA youth programme participants to engage in planning, capacity-building and a General Assembly where they finalised their priorities on youth-led action in development and elected their new Commonwealth Youth Council.

Commonwealth Parliamentarians are participating in four associated Commonwealth Forums taking place this week at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings (CHOGM) in London and Windsor, United Kingdom from 16 to 20 April 2018. Members of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) including the CPA Chairperson, Hon. Emilia Lifaka, MP (Cameroon) and CPA Officers are participating in the Summit and the Forums and other events taking place.

CPA Secretary-General speaks to young people about the importance of Commonwealth political values during first official visit to Jamaica   
The Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Mr Akbar Khan has spoken of the importance of the Commonwealth’s political values and the engagement of young people during his first official visit to Jamaica. During the bilateral visit to Jamaica, the CPA Secretary-General attended a reception hosted by Senator. Hon. Thomas Tavares-Finson, President of the Senate and Hon. Pearnel Charles, MP, Speaker of the House of Representatives, who are also the joint Presidents of the CPA Jamaica Branch.

Commonwealth Parliamentary Association embeds good governance at Post-Election Seminar in Nevis, one of the smallest legislatures in the Commonwealth  
The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) has helped to strengthen parliamentary practice and procedure with the delivery of a CPA Post-Election Seminar for the recently elected Nevis Island Assembly from 15 to 16 May 2018. The CPA Post-Election Seminar, held in Charlestown, Nevis, was held to enable current and recently elected Parliamentarians to gain a broader understanding of the principles of parliamentary democracy and to strengthen their skillsets. The CPA also held a CPA Roadshow for young people in Nevis to promote democracy in the Commonwealth.

Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Secretary-General in bilateral visit to Guyana  
The Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Mr Akbar Khan has completed a bilateral visit to Guyana where he undertook a programme of events with the National Assembly of Guyana and CPA Guyana Branch. The CPA Secretary-General was the guest of the Prime Minister at the 3rd National Guyana Social Cohesion Day Observance ‘celebrating lasting relationships in a diverse society’ at the National Cultural Centre in Georgetown.

Commonwealth Parliamentary Association embeds good governance in Nevis, one of the smallest legislatures in the Commonwealth, as CPA Roadshows for young people take place across the Caribbean Region 
The CPA will help strengthen parliamentary practice and procedure for the recently elected Nevis Island Assembly when it holds a CPA Post-Election Seminar in Charlestown, Nevis. The eight Member Nevis Island Assembly is one of the smallest legislatures in the CPA’s membership of over 180 Commonwealth Parliaments and Legislatures. During the visit to Nevis Island, the CPA Secretary-General will deliver one of three CPA Roadshows for young people in the CPA Caribbean, Americas and Atlantic Region. The CPA Secretary-General will also undertake bilateral visits to Guyana and Jamaica.

43rd Regional Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Caribbean, Americas and Atlantic Region discusses the building of small developing states as it takes place in the Cayman Islands   
The Cayman Islands Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) has successfully hosted the 43rd CPA Regional Conference of the Caribbean, Americas and Atlantic (CAA) Region. The CPA Regional Conference took place between 15th and 23rd June 2018 in Georgetown, Grand Cayman, and saw over 60 delegates from across the CAA region – and the wider Commonwealth – attend and participate in the week-long conference. Regional meetings of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) and the Regional Youth Parliament also took place during the conference.

Parliamentary strengthening partners work to update the CPA’s Benchmarks for Democratic Legislatures to assist Parliaments in meeting contemporary challenges across the Commonwealth   
More than a decade on from the launch of the CPA Recommended Benchmarks for Democratic Legislatures by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and its partners, a new body of work is being undertaken to revise and update the parliamentary Benchmarks to reflect the changed landscape in which democracies now operate. The updated CPA Benchmarks will also include measurements for Parliaments to support the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the recommendations contained in the Commonwealth Charter.
