Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) promotes cross parliamentary cooperation while attending the 2016 IPU Assembly in Geneva

The Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Mr Akbar Khan has attended the 135th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly together with Speakers and Members of Parliament from across the Commonwealth and beyond. The IPU Assembly’s key theme for 2016 was addressing the role of parliaments as early responders to human rights abuses and encouraging Parliamentarians to be at the forefront in raising the alarm and taking action when serious human rights challenges arise.

Caribbean Regional Network builds Parliamentarians’ knowledge of greater financial scrutiny

Parliamentarians from across the Caribbean, Americas and Atlantic (CAA) Region, who are engaged in scrutinising financial budgets and legislation through Public Accounts Committees, have participated in the 2016 meeting of the Caribbean Network of Public Accounts Committees (CarNPAC), hosted by the CPA Jamaica Branch and the Parliament of Jamaica from 24 to 25 October 2016.

Parliamentary strengthening partners hold study group on reviewing democratic benchmarks 

A joint study group of partners in parliamentary strengthening is by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy to review the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA)’s Benchmarks for Democratic Legislatures in light of the aspirations set out in Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Mr Akbar Khan has attended the 2016 Annual Meetings of the World Bank Group (WBG), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and IMF in Washington DC, USA. While at the 2016 Annual Meetings of the World Bank and the IMF at the World Bank Group Headquarters, the Secretary-General also held a number of bilateral meetings to discuss the work of the CPA and its future activities.

Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) visits CPA Northern Ireland Branch at Northern Ireland Assembly and delivers CPA Roadshows to young people 

The Secretary-General, Mr Akbar Khan has visited the Northern Ireland Branch of the CPA at the invitation of Jo-Anne Dobson MLA, Chair of the Northern Ireland CPA Branch, Northern Ireland Assembly. During his visit the Secretary-General met with the Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly and with Members of the CPA Northern Ireland Executive Committee and other Members of the Assembly. The CPA Secretary-General also visited two local schools in Northern Ireland - Lurgan College and Dromore Central Primary School - as part of the CPA Roadshows tour of the Commonwealth schools and universities.

CPA Parliamentary Staff Development Workshop for the Caribbean, Americas and the Atlantic (CAA) Region takes place in St George’s, Grenada 

The 6th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Parliamentary Staff Development Workshop for the CAA Region takes place in St George’s, Grenada, hosted by the Parliament of Grenada from 22 to 24 August 2016. Parliamentary staff will represent the following jurisdictions: Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Guyana, Dominica, Saint Vincent and Grenadines, Jamaica, British Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Montserrat, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos, St Christopher and Nevis and St Lucia.

CPA Mauritius Branch hosts the 47th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Africa Regional Conference

CPA collaborates with World Bank on new book exploring Benchmarking and Self-Assessment for Parliaments 

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) has continued its long collaboration with the World Bank Group to contribute to a new book exploring Benchmarking and Self-Assessment for Parliaments. The new book explores the work of the World Bank and other organisations, including the CPA, in developing a standards-based approach to the assessment of parliamentary effectiveness and performance involving benchmarks and assessment frameworks and builds on the work of the CPA in this area.

CPA Roadshows launched in Bangladesh to increase young people’s awareness of parliament and democracy across the Commonwealth  

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) has launched an exciting initiative that will visit schools and universities across the Commonwealth to help to increase young people’s awareness of parliament and democracy. The CPA Roadshows were launched by the Chairperson of the CPA Executive Committee, Hon. Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury MP, Speaker of the Parliament of Bangladesh, who hosted a group of over 150 young people from five different schools and colleges on a visit to the Parliament of Bangladesh in Dhaka.

The Parliament of Sri Lanka and the CPA Sri Lanka Branch are hosting a Commonwealth Regional Seminar on the Role of Parliamentarians in the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.

The Seminar, hosted in partnership with the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and the Commonwealth Secretariat, is taking place from 1 to 3 February in Colombo, Sri Lanka. 7th Commonwealth Youth Parliament takes place in Darwin, Australia with 50 Young Parliamentarians from 27 countries 
 
The 7th Commonwealth Youth Parliament has taken place from 1 to 5 November 2015 in Australia, hosted by the Legislative Assembly of the Northern Territory in Darwin, Australia bringing together delegates from across the Commonwealth to experience parliamentary life in a real-life situation in the parliamentary chamber.
