Asia Regional Seminar on the Role of Parliamentarians in the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights

Date: 1-3 February 2016
Location: Colombo, Sri Lanka

The Commonwealth Secretariat and Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), in collaboration with the CPA Sri Lanka branch, are jointly convening a three day regional seminar for Asia, India and South-East Asia Legislatures focused on strengthening the role of Parliamentarians in the promotion and protection of human rights. This seminar is part of a series and follows on from seminars already convened for the Caribbean, Americas and Atlantic region (Trinidad and Tobago, 2013), the Africa region (Seychelles, 2014), and the Australia and Pacific regions (New Zealand, 2015).

Africa Regional Workshop on Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and Parliamentarians


Date: 1-4 February 2016
Location: Abuja, Nigeria

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), in partnership with the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO) and in collaboration with the CPA Nigeria Branch, are jointly convening a Workshop on ‘Information & Communication Technology (ICT) and Parliamentarians’. The Workshop aims to provide Parliamentarians with the necessary background information to make informed decisions about ICT legislation and governance.

Parliamentary Staff Development Workshop for the Asia Region

Date: 4-6 May 2016
Location: Islamabad, Pakistan

The CPA is delivering the Workshop in collaboration with the Host Branch. The programme includes the following topics: Practice and Procedure in the House; Committee Administration and Procedure in Committees; Parliament and the Budget and Parliament, Civil Society and the Media. The Seminar is for clerks from National Branches in the Asia and South-East Asia Regions and from each of the Provincial Legislatures in Pakistan.



Post-Election Seminar for the Parliament of Samoa

Date: 10-14 May 2016
Location: Apia, Samoa

At the request of the Parliament of Samoa, the CPA is organising a Post-Election Seminar from 10-14 May 2016. The Legislative Assembly of Samoa held its elections in March 2016. The Post-Election Seminar is a three-day seminar on Parliamentary Practice and Procedure, where experts can share good practice from other Commonwealth Parliaments and relate these experiences in discussion to the local scene. The seminar is aimed at building capacity of newly elected Members of Parliament to enable them function efficiently and effectively in the performance of their democratic duties.




46th BIM Regional Conference

Date: 15-18 May 2016
Location: Jersey, Channel Islands


The Conference will be on the theme of parliamentary engagement with the public. The Annual General Meeting of the BIMR will also take place during the conference. 





Parliamentary Staff Development Workshop for the Pacific Region
Date: 16-18 May 2016
Location: Nadi, Fiji

The CPA is delivering the Workshop in collaboration with the host and the CPA Pacific Regional Secretariat; the programme includes the following topics: Committee Administration and Procedure in Committees; The Administration and Funding of Parliament; Parliament and the Budget; Tradition and Culture in Parliament and Parliament, Civil Society and the Media




International Professional Development Programme for Parliamentary Staff

The CPA in partnership with the World Bank Group and McGill University are collaborating on a university based Executive Development Programme for parliamentary staff, with a one-week residential seminar at McGill University in Canada, followed by expert-moderated e-learning courses. 

The one-week intensive residency training will take place in Montreal, Canada from 16 to 20 May 2016 and will be followed by five web-based courses from September 2016 to June 2017.

13th Canadian Parliamentary Seminar

Date: 29 May- 4 June 
Location: Ottawa, Canada

The theme for these seminars are: Strengthening Democracy and the Role of Parliamentarians: Challenges and Solutions. The Seminar is offered by the CPA Canada Branch and is funded jointly by the CPA Canada Branch and the CPA Secretariat. Its aim is to share best practices throughout the Commonwealth. Commonwealth Parliamentary Seminar

Date: 5-11 June 2016
Location: Queensland, Australia

Commonwealth Parliamentary Seminars originated from the Westminster Seminar and are aimed at providing Parliamentarians with a deeper understanding of the origins and principles of parliamentary democracy. The Seminar explains the adoption of the Westminster standing orders throughout the Commonwealth and the importance of safeguarding these principles. Two seminars are held each year on parliamentary practice and procedure for a representative group of members from all CPA regions.

8th Commonwealth Youth Parliament

Date: 6-10 November 2016
Location: British Columbia, Canada

An annual core programme of the CPA, the Commonwealth Youth Parliament rotates alphabetically through the Regions of the Commonwealth.

Participants will experience life in the parliamentary spotlight and have practical experience of the parliamentary system whilst showing how the next generation would approach parliamentary politics. Formal parliamentary practice adapted from several Commonwealth countries will be followed and the proceedings will be observed under the watchful eyes of experienced parliamentary officials.
