Parliamentary Meeting on occasion of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP20/CMP10), 8 December 2014


The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) has been invited to send an Observer Delegate to the Inter-Parliamentary Union Parliamentary Meeting on the Climate Conference to be held on 8 December, 2014 in Lima, Peru. This meeting is being held in connection with the forthcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference. 

The one-day Parliamentary Meeting in Lima will be organized by the IPU together with the Congress of the Republic of Peru, with support of the geopolitical Group of Latin America and the Caribbean (GRULAC). The Meeting will take place on 8 December on the premises of the Congress.  In addition, there is another event also hosted by the IPU on Tuesday 9 December titled ‘From vision to action plan – Raising the global level of ambition through national and local action’.

The Meeting scheduled for 8 December will provide parliamentarians with an opportunity to obtain first-hand information on the main issues and orientations of the UN Conference, interact with government negotiators directly involved in the decision-making process, gain better knowledge of the recommendations adopted by the IPU with regard to parliamentary action on climate change, and exchange views on parliamentary follow-up sessions. 

As part of the programme on 8 December 2014, the CPA has also been invited to present in an interactive session on the theme ‘Low-carbon future: A case for concerted action by national legislators and local authorities’. The CPA Observer Delegation attending this meeting is being led by Hon. Michael Carrington, MP, Speaker of the House of Parliament, Parliament of Barbados. Hon. Carrington will present on the session ‘Low-carbon future: A case for concerted action by national legislators and local authorities’. The other Keynote Speaker for the session is Ms Alina Averchenkova, from the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment.
