Commonwealth Day 2021 - Activities across the Commonwealth

Commonwealth Day is celebrated annually on the second Monday of March and this year it falls on Monday 8 March 2021, so is fast approaching. The Commonwealth Day 2021 theme is ’Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating and Transforming’ in unity with the theme for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2021) which takes place in June 2021.

Public engagement is crucial in connecting, innovating and transforming social networks and cultures of all societies as it encourages an informed and involved citizenry which is crucial for a functioning democracy. Although Commonwealth Day celebrations may be limited this year due the current global pandemic, the CPA will be hosting a series of online and virtual events.

The Commonwealth has a population of 2.4 billion people and the CPA has works tirelessly throughout the year to ensure that all engagements and activities are as inclusive as all of the representatives of this large population. An astounding 60% of the Commonwealth population are under the age of 29, and these young people are the future of the Commonwealth. Therefore, it is important that they are included and that their voices are championed.

In 2020, in order to commemorate Commonwealth Day, the CPA Headquarters Secretariat released a CPA Commonwealth Day Youth Engagement Pack, for the benefit of all of our CPA Branches in order to inspire Parliaments to engage their young people. This Youth Engagement Pack provides a handbook with suggestions for the different types of youth outreach and engagement programmes that Parliaments can carry out, useful supporting tools to facilitate the delivery of these programmes and a leaflet on relevant information pertaining to the Commonwealth Day 2020 theme.
