Virtual Commonwealth Youth Parliament

14 to 18 December 2020
Online event/Virtual

An annual core programme of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), the Commonwealth Youth Parliament (CYP), will now be taking place in-person on a biennial basis (every two years). Therefore, it is our pleasure to announce the first inaugural Virtual Commonwealth Youth Parliament is to take place from 14 to 18 December 2020.

Following this event, in 2021, there will be the next in-person event, the 11th Commonwealth Youth Parliament (CYP11), the location of which is to be confirmed. The format of Commonwealth Youth Parliament events will proceed to alternate on this basis.

It is expected that over 50 young people from around the Commonwealth will participate as well as young Members of Parliament from CPA Branches. It is an opportunity for young people from the Commonwealth to experience aspects of parliamentary democracy and procedure. They will also convene in a new and innovative setting that reflects the measures many Commonwealth parliaments have taken in response to COVID-19. Formal parliamentary practice adapted from several Commonwealth countries’ virtual responses to the pandemic will be followed and the proceedings will be observed under the watchful eyes of experienced parliamentary officials
.

Participants are nominated by their individual CPA Branches in each Commonwealth Parliament (national or subnational) and so youth participants are asked to contact their local CPA Branch for details of how to apply. Find your local CPA Branch at www.cpahq.org/cpahq/directory.

Each CPA Branch will be looking for two young people to participate in the Commonwealth Youth Parliament and applicants should be aged between 18-29 years (at the time of the event), be confident and articulate to take an active role in the Commonwealth Youth Parliament and have an interest in the Commonwealth and political affairs.
