1981, when the two islands of Antigua and Barbuda became an independent country within the Commonwealth.
Head of state and Executive
The head of state is the British sovereign, styled 'Queen of Antigua and Barbuda and of Her other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth', represented by a governor-general who is appointed on the advice of the prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda. The present sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II, came to the throne in 1952.
The head of government, the prime minister, is the leader of the majority in the House of Representatives and is appointed by the governor-general. The cabinet, which is responsible to Parliament, is also appointed formally by the governor-general, on the prime minister?s advice.
Legislature
The legislature, the Parliament, is bicameral. The lower chamber, the House of Representatives, has 17 members, directly elected for up to five years. The upper chamber, the Senate, has 17 members, appointed by the governor-general on the advice of the prime minister and the leader of the opposition, for the life of the Parliament.

Lower house (House of Representatives): ALP 14 seats; UPP 3 seats.
The opposition ALP won a large majority at the 2014 election, returning to power after ten years of UPP rule under Winston Baldwin Spencer. The BPM lost its only seat by a single vote to the ALP.
Composition of government
The day after the 2014 election ALP leader Gaston Browne was sworn in as prime minister, along with Steadroy 'Cutie' Benjamin as his attorney general. The majority of Browne's cabinet was sworn in on 15 June, with the senior minister sworn in on 27 June.
