Commonwealth Parliamentary Association celebrates Commonwealth Day 2026 across its 180 Parliaments and Legislatures

‘Unlocking opportunities together for a prosperous Commonwealth’

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) celebrated Commonwealth Day 2026 on Monday 9 March 2026 across the CPA’s nine Regions and around 180 Parliaments and Legislatures.

The Commonwealth Day 2026 theme is ‘Unlocking opportunities together for a prosperous Commonwealth’, highlighting the commitment to facilitate the development of transformative, equitable and high-impact opportunities across the Commonwealth.

Commonwealth Day celebrates the enduring spirit of the Commonwealth Family – 56 independent member countries united by shared values enshrined in the Commonwealth Charter.

Rooted in the principles of family, unity and peace, the theme highlights the importance of fostering strong and connected communities that support and empower their members, enabling meaningful progress.

As the Head of the Commonwealth and Patron of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, His Majesty King Charles III released his Commonwealth Day message.

The King said:

"We join together on this Commonwealth Day at a time of great challenge and great possibility. Across our world, communities and nations face the increasing pressures of conflict, climate change and rapid transformation. Yet it is often in such testing moments that the enduring spirit of the Commonwealth is most clearly revealed.
Working together, we can ensure that the Commonwealth continues to stand as a force for good – grounded in community, committed to the kind of restorative sustainability that has a return on investment, enriched by culture, steadfast in its care for our planet, and united in friendship and in the service of its people."

The traditional multi-faith Commonwealth Service was held at Westminster Abbey in London where King Charles and Queen Camilla joined Members of the Royal Family, the Commonwealth Secretary-General, representatives of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, High Commissioners, dignitaries and over 600 schoolchildren. The annual service is organised by the Royal Commonwealth Society.

The Chairperson of the CPA Executive Committee, Hon. Dr Christopher Kalila, MP (Zambia) said:

“As we celebrate Commonwealth Day 2026, we recognise the work of Commonwealth Parliaments and Parliamentarians in promoting our democratic values and principles. The Commonwealth family is strongest when connected through friendship and common purpose and our diversity is our greatest strength.”

The CPA Secretary-General, Stephen Twigg said:

“On this Commonwealth Day, we reaffirm our collective commitment to ‘Unlocking opportunities together for a prosperous Commonwealth’. The CPA is proud to be at the forefront of strengthening democratic institutions through mutual learning; fostering collaboration, inclusion and the sharing of best practice.

In 2026, our CPA Disability Campaign is shining a spotlight on the need for meaningful action from Commonwealth Parliaments to introduce robust disability legislation this year in their jurisdictions. By working together to amplify the voices and experiences of persons with disabilities, we can ensure that opportunity is not an aspiration, but a reality, for all Commonwealth citizens.”

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Hon. Shirley Botchwey, said:

“Commonwealth Day is an occasion to reflect on the strength of our connection and how it can shape our well-being as citizens of the Commonwealth. This year, Commonwealth Day calls us to action, to rally together to face today’s challenges and unlock opportunities that can deliver shared and lasting prosperity for all our people. Opportunity must reach people everywhere — from the smallest, most remote communities to the biggest cities. We are a family of nations whose endowments and common values position us to deliver the extraordinary benefits of a more prosperous and connected Commonwealth, if we work together.”
