CPA Small Branches Workshop D: Human Rights and the Legacy of Colonial Laws

About the Workshop

CPA Small Branches Workshop D: Human Rights and the Legacy of Colonial Laws

This workshop debate will provide a forum for examining how such inherited laws have shaped legal systems, governance and the protection of fundamental rights.

This interactive workshop will take the form of a general debate, inviting participants to critically examine the legacies of colonial-era laws and their relevance in today’s world.

Many Commonwealth countries continue to uphold laws introduced under colonial administrations, some of which directly affect fundamental human rights, including freedom of expression, equality before the law and protections from discrimination. While some argue that these laws are outdated and incompatible with modern democratic values, others believe they still hold relevance or caution against abrupt legal reform.

The debate format encourages participants to practice critical thinking, persuasive communication and respectful exchange of opposing views. By the end of the session, participants will not only have sharpened their debating skills but will also have a deeper understanding of how legal legacies influence human rights today, and what reforms might be necessary to build more inclusive and just societies.
