ABOUT THE CPA CANADA REGION

The Canadian Region of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association comprises of the 14 provinces, territories and the federal Parliament of Canada.

The Region is governed by a Regional Council which is made up of representatives from each of the legislatures of Canada. The Regional Council meets once a year. More information on the Regional Council and its members can be found here.

The Region undertakes a number of programmes including the annual Canadian Parliamentary Seminar. The Regional also publishes The Canadian Parliamentary Review. The publication was founded in 1978 to inform Canadian legislators about activities of the federal, provincial and territorial branches of the Canadian Region of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and to promote the study of and interest in Canadian parliamentary institutions.

Parliamentarians and Clerks across the region convene for an annual regional conference which is hosted in various branches. Over 60 Commonwealth Parliamentarians meet for the 57th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Canada Regional Conference, which took place in Halifax, Nova Scotia from 15 to 19 July 2019.

The CWP regional chapter is highly active. Created in 2005, the CWP-Canadian Region is composed of women parliamentarians of the provincial and territorial Canadian legislatures and the federal parliament. Its aims and objectives are to:

  • provide opportunities for strategic discussion and development for future and current parliamentarians;
  • increase female representation in our parliaments;
  • foster closer relationships among Canadian women parliamentarians
  • foster relations with other countries having close parliamentary ties with Canada; and
  • discuss, strategize and act on gender-related issues in Canada and internationally.

The Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) pursues these objectives by means of annual Commonwealth parliamentary conferences and regional conferences, outreach programmes and participation in many campaign schools across the country. Fine out more about CWP Canada here.
