From the Executive to the Legislature and Back: Who Holds the Key to Advancing Gender Equitable Law and Policy?
This motion explores the experiences of Parliaments in ensuring that legislation responds to gender equality gaps and actively promotes gender equality across all areas of development and legislation. The session will highlight the role of both the executive and legislature as forums to transform gender equality into tangible, enforceable laws and policies. Drawing on lessons and aspirations from Commonwealth Parliaments, participants will contribute to the open debate to critically examine and suggest methodologies for helping the both the executive and legislature to engage in relevant analysis of the issues so that approved policy takes account of relevant gender issues. Participants can also assess the pros and/or cons, advantages and disadvantages of either or both branches co-leading the pursuit of gender-equitable policy and legislation and further discuss steps that Parliaments can take using, for example, Parliamentary Committees and other measures, to ensure that legislation passed goes as far as possible to advance gender equality.
This is a 60 minute open debate session - contributors will volunteer to speak at the session for a fixed duration of up to 5 minutes only. This is to ensure a maximum number of contributors possible can speak within the 60 minutes allocated to the open debate. There will be sign up option available for contributors.
