CWP Workshop on Gender Champions 2023

Event Details

Dates: 6 - 8 December 2023

Location: Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania

Overview

The Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) network will be convening a Workshop on Champions for Gender Equality, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from 6 to 8 December 2023.

Whilst there are numerous examples of women changemakers across the Commonwealth achieving extraordinary progress, the responsibility to gender sensitise parliaments cannot and should not be seen as a burden placed on women parliamentarians and stakeholders alone. As such, the CWP network have identified the need for activities that speak to CPA Branches with particularly low levels of women's representation in their Parliament and which also address how champions of all genders can better address discriminatory practices, unequal access to resources and other issues that prevent the equal participation of women in parliament.

Drawing from first-hand experiences of gender champions from around the Commonwealth, the workshop will expand on the work being undertaken by CWP on gender-sensitive Parliaments (GSP) with particular reference to several dimensions of a GSP: Equality of Participation and Gender Equality Policy/Women’s Substantive Representation, as well as the establishment of Women’s Parliamentary Caucuses.

This three-day workshop will consist of immersive group discussions, skill building sessions, and international and regional networking opportunities. It has been designed to help all Parliamentarians, regardless of gender, build communication and advocacy skills to successfully encourage their institutions and/or wider civil society, to enhance and support women’s political participation.

Registration

A total of 25 spaces are available for the workshop. CPA Branches may apply for a maximum of TWO places. Any CPA Branch nominating two Members should ensure their delegation is gender balanced.

Applications for the workshop must be approved and submitted by a CPA Branch Secretary or equivalent official. We cannot accept direct applications from individual Members of Parliament.

Any individual interested in taking part in this workshop should contact their CPA Branch Secretary for further information.
