To mark International Day of Parliamentarism 2024, join Parliamentarians from around the Commonwealth and hear from leading experts exploring contemporary systemic barriers to women’s participation in politics.
About the webinar
On average, only a quarter of Commonwealth Parliamentarians are women. It is widely cited and acknowledged in the CPA’s Gender Sensitising Parliaments Guidelines: Standards and a Checklist for Parliamentary Change that negative gender stereotypes and socio-cultural norms are obstacles to women’s participation in politics. However, research increasingly highlights how these structural barriers are compounded by the exponential increase in harmful online activity and exposure.
To mark this year’s International Day of Parliamentarism, the Commonwealth Women’s Parliamentarians (CWP) network of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) will host a webinar event that will explore contemporary barriers to women’s participation and representation in politics. With 2024 set to be as a ‘an era-defining election year’, this webinar will reflect on pathways to politics considering the disproportionate structural barriers faced by women Parliamentarians and what actions can be taken.
